Chinese character flashcards

Kanji flashcards in Anki These files are collections of flashcards used to memorize Chinese characters, and can be used with programs such as Anki and AnyMemo. Each contains a different selection of characters:

Contents

The front of each card contains the meaning of the character in English. The back lists the character itself, any simplified, traditional, Japanese or other variants, and pronunciations in Mandarin Chinese (in Hanyu Pinyin), Japanese on-yomi and kun-yomi (in a liberal mix of different romanizations), Korean (in Hangul and/or Yale romanization), Cantonese (in Jyutping romanization), Vietnamese, and/or reconstructed Tang pronunciation.

Characters are included if they're part of either the Japanese Jōyō ("frequent use") list, the school curriculum in Hong Kong, or certain Usenet posts. Characters appearing inside another character are also included, and simpler characters appear first, so they can be learned before characters that contain them. For instance, flashcards for 丶, 匕, 㐅, 凵, 冖, 彡, 木, 缶 and 鬯 appear before the flashcard for 鬱.

Traditional characters are generally used as the main entries for each card, as several traditional characters may map to the same simplified character, and traditional characters are thus less ambiguous. Japanese variants are given their own cards.

Be aware that some of the readings listed, especially some of the Japanese kun readings, are archaic, very rare, or even misspelled. The Mandarin readings are sorted so that the most common ones appear first, while the Cantonese readings are sorted alphabetically.

The file format used is Tab Separated Values (TSV), which can be imported into a number of programs. The files were generated using this program.

Importing the cards into Anki for the first time

Go to the "File" menu and choose "Import...".

Now the flashcards can be used. It's best to leave the default "Show new cards in order added" option alone, as then the basic characters and radicals come before the more complex ones.

Erik Peterson ( http://www.mandarintools.com/ ) and Rick Harbaugh ( http://zhongwen.com/ ) provided invaluable advice regarding the detection and inclusion of component characters. Data from the CHISE Project was also extensively used towards this end. Data about Jōyō grades was found on Wikipedia.
